I’ve always enjoyed the original Cafe Lazari in Vredehoek Avenue, so I was quite stoked to hear that another Lazari was opening in the New Cape Quarter Extension. I was planning to have breakfast there at my earliest opportunity but found an opportunity to have a quick lunch there first. It can be a little hard to find. Luckily I had spotted it when driving around the block because it is situated next to the back entrance of the new Cape Quarter Extension (Cnr Jarvis & Napier Streets).
Those who have been to the original Lazari will know how intimite it is as it is a really tiny place. The new Lazari is huge with two large inside sections and two large outside sections. I hope the kitchen can cope when it is full as there are a lot of tables. It was a fine summery day so we opted for al fresco dining, but the inside and outside flow into each other with no intrusion of walls, etc. so it’s light and airy inside too.
Decor is modern, cheerful with pink adding a splash of colour to the white theme. I perused the breakfast menu out of interest and noted that an english breakfast costs R33 and the omlette of the day R45). My partner decided to have the goats cheese and avocado salad (R48), she said the goat’s cheese was really nice but otherwise the salad looked pretty plain. I had the Thai chicken wrap (R50) which was a generous portion but the sauce is very rich, taking it from a light meal to something quite heavy. I ended up taking half away in a doggy bag. The wrap itself was soft and light, it reminded me of the wrap I had at Buzz Cafe. Next time I want to try the bacon, avo and feta crispy pita (R39) because it sounds delicious.
The service was pretty good and the place was quite busy on a Monday lunch time. It’s not a bad lunch option, especially if you want to dine al fresco. Voila is inside the centre and will be some serious competition. I have a feeling that Lazari will be the more gay option and Voila the more straight option, just judging from decor and the patronage when I dined at each of them.
