If you want to pick a fight with me, just tell me we need genetically modified food in order to feed the world’s growing population. It won’t take more than a few seconds before I am ranting and raving. There is more than enough food to feed the world, but people still go hungry. That’s because the problem is not food supply, it’s economics.
When I was asked to write about Mazda, I thought it would be a tough gig. I don’t write much about cars and I’ve never owned a Mazda. Then I did a Google image search for Mazda, and seeing all the cars they have produced over the years made me realise that Mazdas have been a part of my life all along.
Apps are cool. They are always (well, mostly) designed to be easy and quick to use. I could imagine that having 22Seven as an app would potentially be the key to analysing my income and expenditure without having to invest a ton of time. So I signed up. I’m trying out the app and I’ll be writing some blog posts about my experience as I go along.
The Galileo open air cinema has been going for a few years now. It started just at Kirstenbosch on Wednesday evenings, but now they have a few venues: Hillcrest Quarry (Tuesdays), V&A Waterfront (Thursdays) and various venues in the winelands (Saturdays). My first visit was just a few weeks ago, as I wanted to give them a chance to settle in. And I’m glad I did, because it was a slick operation by the time I went.
Open kitchens have become a common thing these days, being able to see into the kitchen while one is sitting in the restaurant is not really a novelty anymore. In fact, most diners ignore the kitchen, preferring to focus on other things like the conversation at their table. Which makes sense, as dining out is normally a social occasion more than an eating occasion. However, sometimes dining out is about the experience, something different, and a chef’s table offers exactly that.
Last night was the 2014 Eat Out Restaurant Awards sponsored by Mercedez Benz. The top 10 restaurants in South Africa were announced, selected from the 20 nominees announced a few weeks ago. In addition there were category awards, recognising restaurants which are not necessarily fine dining but still offer an exceptional experience.
It doesn’t seem so long ago that I wrote about the very first Christian Eedes Chardonnay report but it was 4 years ago! With a few years under the belt, the Christian Eedes Chardonnay Report is in a good position to comment on trends in this variety as well as spot the consistently performing producers.
We want the free-range meat and the organic veg and the pastured dairy and what not, but we don’t want to be inconvenienced. We want Woolworths to sort it out for us. We want to be able to live the way we live, and have someone clean up after us. In other words, we want to consume as much as we consume and not have to feel bad.
